- (For the curious I posted this once already but for some reason, must
- have been the Microsoft Natural Keyboard, called the Doggle a Toggle.
- Clearly it may be a toggle(if its not on it doesn't work), but I would
- much rather call it a Doggle(I was thinking Doggle I swear) so I've
- canceled that horrible post where I misspelled/typed/etc the piece of
- crap copy protection that I now have to get another one of. I am
- not having a good week.)
-
- Well I've been happily running Lightwave on my PC since it came out(a few
- weeks). This week however wasn't so happy. I'd left my PC running
- a VistaPro anim(ok so sometimes I don't use Lightwave) and was watching
- TV. When I went back to check I found the whole machine locked up. Ok
- no problem, happens all the time. But when I rebooted the computer
- wouldn't boot(no vga, no boot activity). After fiddling with it, I came to
- the conclusion that the mother board was scorched. So I took it in(under
- warranty, thank god). And they replaced my mother board. Last night
- I tried running Lightwave and lo and behold it can't find the doggle.
- I checked it several times, it was there. I fiddle the BIOS setup(just
- in case something was different with the new motherboard). No luck. I'm
- fairly certain that my doggle has bit the big one. Of course Newtek
- techincal support never answer the phone and never return phone calls. I
- just hope I can get a replacement sometime this decade.
-
- But this brings up an interesting problem, did the doggle blow the
- motherboard? If you look at the PC parallel port you notice right off
- that there is no power supply. Which means that in order to power
- their doggle they are "counting" on pulling one of the lines high and
- using that to power the doggle. Of course that line is connected to my
- neptune chip set and not directly to the +5v. So if for some reason
- the doggle went bad and decided to pull more current it would be
- pulling it through my motherboard. It might be hard to prove anything, but
- I suspect I wouldn't have a hard time winning a case in court over this.
- As a result as soon as I can get a new doggle, I think I'm going to pick
- up one of these parallel port on a card and use that to run the doggle.
- That way its not going to have such an easy time roasting my motherboard.
- Of course you also need to be careful to not disconnect the doggle while
- the computer is on/etc. I'd be interested to hear from other people
- with "doggle" problems. I thought the Rainbow guys knew what they
- were doing. Has this been a problem with 3DS? Perhaps it was just
- a case of bad karma.
